RESUMEN: Durante
las dos primeras décadas del siglo XX las
minas de cobre de Cerro Muriano (Córdoba, España), ya entonces legendarias por
su pasado minero, fueron explotadas a escala industrial. Los promotores: una
serie de inversores ingleses que confiaron la marcha de su negocio a la
prestigiosa agencia londinense John Taylor & Sons. Este artículo recoge un
sintético análisis microeconómico de aquella aventura empresarial, a partir del
cual se ofrecen algunas reflexiones sobre dos fenómenos históricos de alcance internacional:
el colonialismo económico bajo el que este tipo de explotaciones se
desarrollaron por todo el mundo; y la consecuente, y temprana, globalización de
los sistemas económicos, tecnológicos y sociales en torno a la actividad minera.

ABSTRACT: During the first two decades of the 20th century the
Cerro Muriano copper mines (Córdoba, Spain), by that time already famous due to
the abundant remains of ancient workings preserved there, were developed on an
industrial scale by several English investors, who entrusted the management of
their enterprise to the prestigious London-based agency John Taylor & Sons.
This article comprises a concise microeconomic analysis of the venture, which
then forms the basis for a more generalised consideration of two international
historic phenomena: the economic colonialism which led to the world-wide
proliferation of this type of mining operations; and the resultant “proto-globalization”
of economic, technological and social systems around the mining world.
